HMB Stories HMB met and opened for a band that ranks highly on HMB's list of musical Heroes; Bobhan Markowicz. Prior to the gig, Markowicz gave a master class at Julliard which I attended along with some other band members. It was great- we learned some new odd timings. Coming from an 'art school band' background with no musical training, I was a little nervous about going to this class. But it was fun and we were able to communicate well despite the language (Bosnian) barrier.
When it came to light during this workshop that Bobhan dos not read music, nor do his muscians i was shocked and actually kind of happy. They learn and play the music the same way I have always done it- by playing together and making my own kinds of notations. This is not the first time I have come across thisÐ but before it's been in a rock setting that I have found self trained musicians who don't read music. So I felt validated in a way to see that composers and players emerging from a different setting with a different vocabularyÐ can be so highly revered and be recognized internationaly. Cool , eh?
